It could be prescribed alone, or in combination with metformin, branded as Avandamet. At the time these drugs were withdrawn, some 90,000 UK users relied upon them.
The Harmful Side Effects
In clinical trials conducted by GSK, many alarming side-effects and rates of occurrence surfaced, but these were not disclosed. It was later discovered that data covering 42 clinical trials, involving 28,000 patients, demonstrated that Avandia could cause heart attacks. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration believes that Avandia may be responsible for some 100,000 heart attacks. In later trial results, published in 2010, it was found that:
- People on Avandia were 27% more likely to have a stroke
- 25% more likely to have heart failure
- and 14% more likely to die
Compared to those patients on an alternative diabetes drug. GSK later pleaded guilty in the US for concealing the data. Yet, despite this, GSK are heavily defending cases brought against them by victims and their families who were harmed by Avandia in the UK.
