How Does Asbestos Cause Asbestosis?
Asbestos is made up of tiny, hard, sharp fibres. When breathed in, these fibres can damage the lungs by making tiny cuts in the tissue. This creates irritation, resulting in scarring and thickening to the lung tissues, preventing them from functioning properly.
With all the high-profile media coverage there’s been in recent years – it would be hard to find someone who’s not heard of asbestosis. The recent number of successful compensation cases is proof of how dangerous asbestos is. However, it is not the only illness that this hazardous substance can cause. It’s also been linked to mesothelioma, lung cancer and pleural plaque. Nasty stuff indeed!
And, once you have asbestosis, it makes you more likely to develop other lung conditions, such as cancer, further down the line.
Am I Likely to be Affected by Asbestosis?
Most people will never have been in contact with asbestos. And now that it has been banned from use, it is unlikely that you will come into contact with it in the future.
People who are most at risk, are those who have had careers in areas such as shipbuilding, engineering and carpentry, where the material was widely used. If you have worked in these areas and the correct safety equipment wasn’t given by your employer, it could have caused serious harm.
So, if you were exposed to asbestos, and you’ve now been diagnosed with asbestosis or another asbestos related disease, Asons can help you claim the compensation you deserve.
I Think I May Have Been Exposed, What Should I Do?
If you have worked in an industry that commonly used asbestos, or you experience any ongoing symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath or chest pain, speak to your GP immediately. You should talk to your GP about:
- Any past or present jobs with an asbestos risk
- Living with someone who has worked in a job with an asbestos risk
- DIY or other situations where you might have been exposed to asbestos
- Your symptoms and Treatment
- Tests you may need
- Whether you should see a specialist in asbestos related disease
What are the Symptoms of Asbestosis?
There are a number of symptoms you may experience. These include:
- shortness of breath
- Pain in the chest
- Tightness across the chest
However, you may also have these symptoms if you are suffering from other different conditions too! That’s why it’s important it to mention to your GP, if you think you’ve been exposed to asbestos in the past. And, when we say ‘in the past’, we mean anything up to 30 years ago, as the evidence suggests that it can take this long to show itself.
How will it be diagnosed?
Your GP will examine your chest – listening to it with a stethoscope – you’ll also have lung function tests and, if asbestosis is suspected, you will probably be sent for x-rays and further tests in an attempt to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatments For Asbestosis
Unfortunately, there is no treatment for asbestos related diseases. Once the damage is done, it cannot be cured. Treatment will only help keep the condition stable. You may be prescribed oxygen, to help you get enough into your body, and other medications that will help reduce any swelling on the lungs.
These serious health conditions are why you’re able to make claims for compensation. As you get older, you may need specialist care or expensive equipment to make your life easier – that’s what compensation’s for!

Asbestosis Compensation Claim
Claiming is easy with Asons. Our team is experienced in dealing with these kinds of cases, so we know exactly what you’ll need to make a successful claim.
What we need to prove in these cases, is that the asbestosis, was due to someone else not protecting your health. This is known as ‘negligence’ in the legal terms. We’ll be able to advise you on how to make a claim quickly and simply – all we need are a few details from you.
It’s Not Personal!
Claiming compensation because you’ve suffered as a result of someone else’s carelessness, is not personal – it’s your right! You may consider them a friend, but if they are also your employer, they should make sure that you are protected whilst under their responsibility.
All employers must have insurance to cover their employees for this type of situation. It’s this insurance that you claim from, not the individual.
Our Compensation Claims Experience
If you’re making a claim for compensation, you want to know that you have the best people for the job. That’s us! Asons are experienced at claiming compensation for asbestosis, and we like to keep things simple. We use clear, plain English – no fancy jargon here – so that you understand what’s happening with your case and why. We are upfront and honest about what fees you’ll have to pay and we make sure there are no hidden costs – so you don’t end up with a nasty surprise.
We do all the hard work, so you don’t have to. You’ll have a dedicated claim handler who will explain how everything works, we’ll contact the other people involved and deal with all the correspondence on your behalf. We take the stress, so you don’t have to.
Making a claim is limited by something called a ‘statute of limitations’. What this means for you, is that any claim for compensation, has to be done within three years of the date of the exposure or from when you were made aware of the exposure causing you damage.
At Asons, we can tell you quickly and easily if you can make a claim for compensation. If you can, we’ll help you through the process – from the beginning right through to end – you’re in safe hands at Asons!
‘No Win, No Fee’
The last thing you need when you are considering making a claim for compensation is to be worrying about how you will pay for it. For this reason, Asons operate on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis. This means you pay nothing, not one penny, until we’ve won your case.
If the person responsible for your suffering admits to negligence, before your compensation claim comes through, you will be able to claim for interim payments. These can you help pay for any expensive treatment you may need, or rehabilitation you’d like to try. They can also help to cover the everyday costs that build up, such as gas and electric and food bills.
