Shipyards and Shipbuilding in the North East

Shipbuilding is big business in the North East. With access to the North Sea from ship yards on the Rivers Tees, Tyne and Wear, it’s an ideal area for a busy ship manufacturer. That’s probably why companies, such as Swan Hunter – probably the most well-known of the ship builders – Palmers Hebburn, Wallsend Slipway, Hawthorn Leslie, Smith’s Docks, John Redhead & Sons, Vickers Walker Naval Yard and Clelands Shipbuilders all chose this location.

Middlesborough and Sunderland also had a number of productive shipyards to their name. In Middlesborough, the main companies were Haverton Hill and Smiths Docks.

But in Sunderland there were lots of shipbuilders. In fact, at one point there were so many that Sunderland became known as ‘the largest shipbuilding town in the world.’ Companies operating out of this area included JL Thompsons, TW Greenwell, Bartrams, William Doxfords, Austin & Pickersgills and Sir James Laing. Many of these firms later merged into the British Shipbuilders Corporation in the 1970s.

Working for one of these shipyards means you were more than likely exposed to asbestos on a daily basis. This can be devastating for your health, and will probably end up with you suffering from an asbestos related disease, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

If you think you could have a case for making a claim for compensation, why not discuss your options with us – we’re here to help!

Why Was I Exposed to Asbestos in North East Shipyards

The use of asbestos was wide-spread in the ship-building industry in the 50s, 60s and 70s, before it was banned. Shipbuilders loved it because it has some amazing properties. For starters, it’s resistant to corrosion, highly insulating, fire retardant and it’s flexible too. This meant that could be used in all areas of the ship, so that’s what happened.

Consequently, anyone working in a shipyard at that time would, no doubt, have been exposed asbestos on a daily basis. This often occurred with no warnings about the dangers of inhaling the dust, not any protective equipment being on offer.

Now, years later, there are ex-shipbuilders all over the country suffering from, or with the potential to develop, asbestos related diseases, such as pleural thickening, asbestosis, mesothelioma and even lung cancer. Are you one of them?

If you worked for one of the shipbuilding companies based in the North East, and you are now suffering from an asbestos related disease, talk to us about the chances of making a successful claim against your employer at the time. It’ll only take a couple of minutes, but the compensation you could receive, might change your life forever!

Asbestos Related Diseases Can Take Up To 50 Years to Show Themselves!

Often people who have been affected by asbestos don’t even know it. This is because the symptoms can take from 20-50 years to show up. That’s a very long time and most people don’t make the connection to somewhere they were working years ago and their current illness.

So, if you worked in a North Eastern shipyard in the past, and you now have an asbestos related disease, it’s likely your exposure whilst at work is the cause.

Is My Family at Risk From Asbestos Related Diseases?

It’s tragic that shipbuilders who were exposed to asbestos have also put their families at risk too!

The toxic dust that asbestos creates is easily transported into the homes of workers on the gear that they bring home, such as bags and overalls. There have already been cases where compensation has been paid out to family members of workers who were contaminated with asbestos, so it is a real threat.
