Asbestos dust is deadly. So deadly, in fact, that even those not working directly with it can become exposed, simply by being around those that do. This is known as ‘secondary exposure’.
How does this happen? It’s easy. As a person is working with asbestos, the dust it creates settles onto everything. It can be on the body, such as in the hair or on exposed skin, and on work-gear, such as bags, coats or overalls.
When that worker finishes their shift and goes home, they take the dust with them. Once at home, the dust is transferred from the clothes and equipment into the air. It can then be breathed into the lungs of anyone who nearby.
In days gone by, it was common for the men to take their overalls home for washing each night. It’s not hard to see how their wives became susceptible to asbestos-related diseases, as they were the ones doing the washing of the contaminated overalls.
If the workers had known about the dangers of breathing in asbestos dust, they could have taken precautions to prevent further contamination. This might have been something as simple as changing their clothes or leaving items that have dust on them at work.
Unfortunately, many people were not informed by their employers of the dangers the dust represented, and so did nothing to ensure they were dust free before they returned to their families. Sadly, now anyone in the same living space is at risk of contracting an asbestos-related disease, and many did! The wives of male shipyard workers were some of the most at risk and several successful claims have already been made for those who suffered secondary exposure to asbestos.

In law, this is classed as a personal injury claim, so there’s a very strict time limit in place for claiming. Any claims for compensation must be made within three years of either the date you were exposed, or the date you discovered that your illness is due to exposure. The time limit is called a ‘statute of limitations’.
However, there are some differences in the rules if you believe you were exposed to asbestos from a parents work clothes when you were a child. If you think this situation may apply to you, call us to discuss your options.
‘No Win, No Fee’
We don’t believe that those who’ve been exposed to asbestos should suffer financially if they want to make a claim for compensation. That’s why we use the ‘no win, no fee’ system.
