Lib Dem MP Paul Burstow proposed a new offence of ‘corporate neglect’ be implemented where senior management has allowed abuse to occur.     Despite a 20% drop in the last decade (according to the National Cancer Intelligence Network), ovarian cancer remains one of the biggest killers of women in the UK, with over 7,000 cases being diagnosed annually.   • Health Care researchers say 28,000 patients die each year across NHS from complications, which could have been cured.

    The Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the nurses’ union, claims there are not enough nurses on hospital wards to ensure elderly people get helped to eat, walk and have someone to talk to, according to research it has conducted. Thousands of patients are dying in hospitals each year because there are not enough doctors or nurses and patients are almost 10 per cent more likely to die if there are fewer medically-trained staff on wards, the study found.

    A much needed review into the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) has led to care minister Norman Lamb, who has commissioned the review, to saying the cash incentives should only be made where it can be shown that they ‘demonstrably improve care’.   • NICE Issue New Guidelines for the Management of Ectopic Pregnancy

    The National Institute for Clinical Excellence issued new guidelines on the 12/12/12 for the diagnosis and Initial Management of ectopic pregnancy. This occurs in approximately 1.9 % of all reported pregnancies. If the ectopic pregnancy is not diagnosed in time this can lead to rupture of the fallopian tube, which may result in its removal, thus affecting future fertility.

  • Tragic Case of Grandfather Asbestos Death in Bolton

    An inquest found that Mr Thomas had been exposed to asbestos 30 years earlier during his tenure with Beldam Crossley in Lostock. During his work he would cut up sheets of asbestos without wearing any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), leading to the inhalation of asbestos fibres which later resulted in the mesothelioma condition. Unfortunately, it was only when Mr Thomas came down with pneumonia that doctors discovered that he also had mesothelioma.
